The Project

DistriMuSe (Distributed Multi-Sensor Systems for Human Safety and Health) is an EU co-funded project focused on enhancing human health and safety by improving the detection of human presence, behavior, and vital signs in shared environments. The project leverages multi-sensor systems, distributed processing, and machine learning to achieve its goals. Over the course of three years, 50 partners are collaborating to tackle technological and innovation challenges, supported by the European Union through the Horizon-KDT-JU-Research and Innovation Action program.

Objectives of the Project

Key Focus Areas and Use Cases
DistriMuSe will focus on three main areas, each explored through specific use cases that demonstrate the project’s potential to improve human health and safety:

1. Continuous Hybrid Health Monitoring
This use case aims to enable continuous and unobtrusive health monitoring, with three key applications:
o Early detection of health issues in elderly individuals.
o Near-clinical sleep monitoring at home to identify sleep-related health conditions.
o Personalized rehabilitation and coaching services for timely and effective recovery.

2. Situational Awareness for VRU and Driver Safety
In this use case, RE:LAB’s driving simulator plays a crucial role. The focus is on ensuring safer traffic conditions, particularly for vulnerable road users (VRUs). Key objectives include:
o Continuous monitoring of VRUs’ behavior and intentions in traffic interactions.
o Assessing drivers’ ability to drive safely and maintaining their attention at appropriate levels for different traffic situations, especially when VRUs are present.

3. Safe Interaction with Robots
This use case focuses on improving collaboration between human workers and robots on factory floors. The goal is to enhance robots’ ability to monitor human presence and understand their intentions, ultimately eliminating the need for safety fences that separate humans from industrial robots. By enabling more efficient and safe human-robot collaboration, RE:LAB will develop, test, and validate Human-Machine Interface (HMI) solutions to improve communication between operators and robots.
DistriMuSe represents a significant step toward a future where technology seamlessly integrates into our environments, enhancing safety, health, and efficiency in daily life.
