The book, edited by Roberto Montanari and Michele Zannoni, collects in 4 macro-sections scientific research and investigations, born in the context of the Advanced Design Unit of the Department of Architecture of the University of Bologna, on how the pervasive diffusion of new technologies is creating an unprecedented awareness, that takes shape in practices and processes of deep manipulation of the body through design.

Among the many contributions by scholars and scientists from various organizations and universities, RE:LAB also played an active role in the production of this volume, thanks to the contribution of some colleagues.

In the first section of the volume ntitled Human Bodies Design and New Interaction Scenarios, the opening paper written by Roberto Montanari, Annalisa Mombelli, Arianna Fantesini, (R&D Area of RE:LAB), highlights social, legal and design aspects of haptic technology, related to the evolution and integration of these systems in order to an increasingly natural and safe rendering of sensory perception, particularly in virtual reality contexts.

In the second section Human Bodies, digital and virtuality, the collected articles introduce the crucial topic of the digital world’s design in two main connotations: one devoted to the dematerialization of experience in virtual spaces and one to the importance of monitoring emotions in design processes.

In this framework, from the project of Virtual Dance for Real People, the two authors Annalisa Mombelli (RE:LAB) and Fabio Ferretti (FND/Aterballetto) have chosen to explore the relationship between virtual reality and creation on stage, investigating how much the combination of these two elements allows the construction of a perceptual cross-references’ game between the presence and absence of bodies.
